Legend of Odysseus

Mljet was widely known by for its beauty, in ancient Greek times as well. Mljet is believed to be the island mentioned in the famous epic poem ‘Odyssey’ as the paradise island where the Calypso nymph detained Odysseus, king of Itaka. Odysseus was a fair ruler, loved by his people. According to Homer, Odysseus, on his return from the Trojan War survived a shipwreck on the rock close to the island of Ogygia.   Half dead, he swam to the cave where he was enchanted by the nymph Calypso.

Even though she granted him many pleasures of this world, on which many, and even Gods were envious, Odysseus was unhappy, crying for return to this homeland and wife.  God Zeus finally felt sorry for Odysseus and after seven years he forced nymph Calypso to let him go home.   Odysseus built a raft and sailed to sea.

There is no material evidence about the existence of neither Odysseus nor Calypso.  But, we are left with a possibility to visit the island of Mljet and the beautiful Odysseus cave, and to at least enjoy the view and the energy Mljet gives to its visitors...
